The Delin
motorcycle was produced in Aken, Germany and
assembled in Belgium. Imported into Rhodesia by Mr.
Ernest South, a farmer and pioneer of mechanised
equipment. The bike was used on his estate, Warwick
Farm, north of Salisbury. It appears that the engine
was later removed and converted into a compressor.
Mr South died in 1965 and some years later the
remains of the cycle were found under a farm
workshop bench. The remains were passed onto Frank
May who passed them onto Neil Smith who carried out
the restoration. The engine is of De Dion pattern
(built under license) and is stamped with the serial
no. 11. The diamond pattern frame was reconstructed
using BSA fittings and follows the orignal design as
far as possible, the front forks are of slightly
later design. |
