Make Otto
History          
Year 1910                                                      
One of only two survivors of the American Otto Gas Engine Works' foray into car making. At one time the in the ownership of one of the Otto Directors and then his family until the 1950s. Sold to the Midland Motor Museum who owned it until it was sold privately in 1988. Restored in the 1980s. Used in Europe and Africa, seen at the 1999 Yes Concours in Nairobi, Kenya, believed to have been owned by the boss of a company called Mohan Meaken. Taken back to the US in July 2002 remaining in a private collection in San Francisco. Sold by Bonhams & Butterworths for $45 000 (with commission, $51 750) in Aug 2004 at Quail Lodge, California..

1924-34, first owner is unknown. The car may have been first sold by Shaw & Kilburn, the London agents. 1934 the car was purchased by Anthony Heal from a garage close to the family business in Tottenham Court Road, London. After a hectic life, the car was sold to J.C. Morland in 1948, who took the car to Kenya in 1951. It was later owned by P. Hoosan and then from 1955 to 1973 by Nick March (Kenya & South Africa), 1973-76 by Ian Thompson and since 1976 by Mike Rourke.

The car arrived at Durban harbour in October 1970, with Nick March who had emigrated to South Africa with his family. They settled in Greytown, Natal, where they had purchased a farm. During 1973 the car was sold to Ian Thompson of  Pietermaritzburg, who sold it to Mike Rourke in 1976. The car was not running and was in a poor state mechanically, but still retained the body that had been built by Cassini & Tonolo in Nairobi. Ian Thompson had covered the steel body with fabric and fitted Bentley Vanden Plas style mudguards, which were removed during Mike's restoration. Mike also had a replica Velox ash body with mudguards built in the UK, by a London based company called Peals (or Peales?). A number of other parts were also made, including a new engine block and a new radiator by Peter Stevenson of Rugby. From around 1980 work on the car took a back seat anf after a move to George, Southern Cape in Sept 1987 to a  dairy farm, work was halted till 2003. Mike managed to complete most of the work himself, except for applying the aluninium skin to the wooden frame and the leather uphostery.

Nic Portway wrote an excellent book titled "Vauxhall 30/98, the Finest of Sporting Cars", there are photos of this car on paged 158, 173, 176 and 179, all of which were taken pre war.
