Picked up in
late 1961 by Peter Huson whilst on leave in England,
having been purchased through Car Mart in Bulawayo.
The car was to be used for racing and Peter was
advised to modify the mini in stage to keep ahead of
the handicapper, going for wins in the 1000cc class.
In the end the car ended up with a fully
skimmed and polished cylinder head, matched and
polished inlet manifold, competition valves and
valve springs, twin S.U. carburettors, banana branch
exhaust manifold, competition nine spring clutch,
close ratio gearbox, electronic rev counter , oil
cooler, competition fan, competition wheels with
Michelin X tyres, Mintex brake linings and bespoke
sump guard for rallies. I am told the mini was very
quick and in the end was showing a clean pair of
heels to standard mini Coopers. With its excellent
handling on dirt roads, the car made a very good
rally car, and did well in its class in Club Race
Meetings, Sprints, Hill Climbs, Driving Tests and
Rallies as well as National Events. Part exchanged
in 1965 for a Ford Cortina GT that was also
collected in the UK whilst on leave.
