Notes from
photographer - "Photo is of a shot up vehicle I found next to the road to Kariba. I missed the convoy to Kariba, and drove all by my lonesome trying to catch it. It was like driving on the surface of the moon, the only traffic I saw for hours was the convoy coming back from Kariba, and they had an Eland armored car and a helicopter gunship flying over the convoy. They stopped me and told me I was absolutely nuts to be driving by myself on that road, but I was only about 10 minutes behind the other convoy, and I did not have enough gas to make it back, so I pushed on. Couple of miles down the road I found this vehicle, have no idea what happened to it or when, but the bulllet holes are plainly visible(and so is my Beretta shotgun barrel poking out the window!). I also found a guy with a flat tire with one of the "truck gunships" guarding him while he changed the tire, and they told me the same thing. Daily ambushes on this road, and I was bonkers. I drove like a bat out of hell, and just hoped I did not hit an elephant, because I saw quite a few of them." |
