Classic Cars in Rhodesia

Make Studebaker History
Year
8 cylinder inline engine. One of 5 such cars built to race in the Indy 500, this car was no. 9 and was painted black. Imported into South Africa in 1935. Modified by George Anderson and raced in the 1935 Kimberley 500 by Dougie Van der Reit. The car was then not used much until acquired in the 1950s by Tex Kingon, who used the car, along with Ray Reider, in a number of races. Tex died in 1955 whilst racing his Maserati 6C34 at East London.

Taken to Rhodesia at some stage and raced at least once in Bulawayo, possibly owned by a Mr. Draper. It apparently only appeared at a few races as it was not any good on tight twisty tracks. The engine was apparently then removed and fitted to a Studebaker Hearse.

Photo on left shows the car driven by Tex Kingon at the 1st False Bay 100 1952. The photo on the right and that below it, c/o the Crankhandle Chronicle Jan 2018, show the car at the 2nd False bay 100 1953.

History
Year
Originally owned by Sir Ernest Oppenheimer in South Africa, the car later founds its way to Bulawayo, Southern Rhodesia where it was converted into a Hearse. The car was at some stage acquired by Tom Jennings' father and given to Tom to restore, having been unused for about 5 years. The engine of this car was shot, so Tom acquired the engine from the Studebaker Indianapolis and rebuilt it into this car. At the same time he converted the car back into a limousine. Sold at some stage to a relative, George Parkin. The car is believed to have gone to Louis Trichard, South Africa.
