V 20 Club of Nyasaland (Malawi) - thanks to Tony Hawken of Blantyre, Malawi

V Twenty Club

This is a short history of the formation of what is believed to be the second Motor Car Club in Nyasaland, later Malawi. The first club is the Nyasaland Motor Car Club, their badge shows a Leopard on a rock, with the sun's rays behind it. As to the V 20 club, in 1955, a small group of car enthustiasts gathered together for a braai (BBQ) at the home of John Whitelock, ChiefEngineer at the Imperial Tobacco Company. Between them they had an impressive array of vintage cars and motorcycles, together with some post war classics and it was decided to offer membership to anyone interested in preserving classic vehicles over the age of twenty years, thus was born the V 20 Club. Members at that time were John Whitelock, Colin Keeley, Carl Kilner, Max Bruessow and Dudley Taylor. Tony Hawken joined the club around July 1968. The club was not officially registered and did not have a constitution and possibly no fee. Meetings were normally braai's at members' houses on a Sunday morning. The badge was designed by Max Bruessow (an Architect) to design a suitable badge. This was done and twenty badges were cast in aluminium, polished and engraved with the simple heading 'TWENTY' under the Vee.
Cars known to have been owned by V 20 club members include:
1932 Talbot roadster, 1922 Fiat, 1925 Fiat, 1927 Austin 7, 1948 Delahaye, 1935 Bentley, Fiat 850, Fiat 124 sports coupe, 1961 Mini Cooper, 1943 Harley-Davidson with sidecar, 1955 Austin Healey BN3, 1927 Model A, 1948 Sunbeam S8s, Brough Superior, 1920s Indian, 1952 Bentley, Rolls-Royce coupe, 1951 MG TD, 1950 Mercedes Ponton Convertible, 1950 Mercedes Limousine ex Haile Selassie, 1955 MG TF, 1952 MG TD, 1948 Jaguar XK120 (rare RHD alloy body), 1965 Sunbeam Tiger, 1968 MGC Roadster, 1948 Jaguar 2.5-litre, 1958 Jaguar 2.4-litre, 1926 Austin 7, 1958 Austin Healey Sprite, 1955 Triumph TR3, 1960 Zephyr Zodiac convertible, 938 MG WA Tickford, various motorcycles, Ford Starliner V8, 1967 Ford Mustang, 1955 Pontiac V8, 1950 Austin Sheerline ex Governor General's car, Sunbeam Rapier, Humber Sceptre.
